The University of Salford has a long history of working with industry, improving on its traditional strengths of nursing, engineering and sports medicine. It was founded in its original form in 1850 before being awarded full university status in 1967, and there are currently over 20,000 students enrolled across 60 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Irwell.
Following the results of the National Student Survey, 83% of Salford graduates were satisfied with their time at the University. Improvements were also made in all subject areas, with 100% satisfaction in Media Technology, Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering, Professional Studies Nursing and Social Work and Architecture Design and Technology.
Salford was one of the first universities to offer a ‘sandwich’ degree, a year-long work placement, while its most recent development is MediaCityUK, which allows students to work and study with numerous companies in order to gain vital experience and contacts. Students studying at MediaCity have the chance to collaborate with the BBC in a working studio environment and six national departments, as well as companies such as Adobe and BAE Systems.
The University of Salford offers InterLINK, a way of introducing new international students to another student who knows about living in the UK and being a student at Salford. InterLINK mentors are students from the UK who can give international students friendly advice and support and help them to get used to living and studying at the University. The student union runs the International Society for International Students, while The International Life Centre at University House hosts a number of events and activities throughout the year.
Salford also runs a number of English language programmes for international students, ranging from an International Foundation Year to the eight-week Super Intensive Summer Study English Programme.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 50% of Salford’s research was judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. The areas of Social Work and Policy, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Environment stood out.
All first year students are guaranteed a place in University accommodation provided they apply within the deadline, with Constantine Court and Horlock Court both based on campus, while all other accommodation is a short distance away and a free campus bus service is provided during term time.
Constantine Court is en-suite, in houses of 13 students, while Horlock has houses of 12 students. The student village just off campus has 11 bedroom houses or 6 bedroom flats, all with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities.
